I'm
glad to hear you are teaching again as I read about some of your troubles before.  Congratulations!  Hang in there, and like Sam said give them your best and you'll be OK.

Nitetide

Sometimes you have to speak out to defend what is right and it may be a struggle but you can live with yourself afterwards.

The major feature length screen play I am writing after my two short features for my course is going to be about bullying that goes on in a school situation and a teacher who commits suicide because of it. It is an issue that needs to be addressed and some teachers are better at it than others.

I am outspoken and I can be a bitch in that I will give back if you are nasty to me - I won't lie down and take it and I will not allow kids to be treated roughly either by those who have the power to do so and think that education is about pulling others down to make yourself feel and look better.

Education is about building kids up - giving hope and self confidence to those that don't have it for various reasons. Good educators are builders of great people and not destroyers of the weak and vulnerable.

Damn...I hate it when...
I make simple mistakes...I meant: "AGAINST the veterans" not 'again'  - silly me!

Ouch...
I see why you had so much trouble in 2006 now.  You have got some serious backbone, my friend, to be able to do that.  I can barely speak up again the veterans at my school!  But I completely understand what you mean by those mean and nasty teachers who wield power against others and their students in an unhealthy manner.  I'm fairly a recluse at the school and most of the teachers don't see me.  I talk to the pleasant ones, but even my students know that I like to hide out in my room and that I find their company far more enjoyable to being in the staff lunch room.  I don't like being near negativity of that kind.  It makes me angry every time I hear it, so I just choose to keep to myself.  I find it funny that I've been there for 2 years and I have random teachers come up to me and go, "Hi!  I've never seen you here, are you new?"  And I laugh.  But then again, everything has to be laughable, or else I'll lose it.

Such a noble profession. Hang in there and give them everything you have. It may take time for them to realize it but what you do now can have lifelong benefits. Good luck!  sam

Hey, I'm a teacher myself...

And I know how it feels to have all eyes on you...with boredom in every one of them.  I think the trick is, you have to not care what your students think of you.  They'll either like you or hate you, and that's up to them - and all students will always be at both sides of the spectrum.  If they're not into the learning, that's not your fault, it's because they lack the motivation in their minds.  No matter how "boring" my teachers were, I got out of it, what I needed and that's all that really mattered to me in my younger days.  For me, if a student is movtivated enough, then it doesn't matter how boring, psycho, or weird the teacher is, he/she will learn, no matter what.  If you can spark interest in the majority of the class, then the stragglers will follow.  I guess it helps that I'm a bouncing ball of energy when it comes to the classroom, so they all know I'll be crazy.

Might I ask, what happened to you in 2006?  If you'd rather not talk about it...I completely understand. (Ah, but if it's already in your blogs...I'll find it!)
