Re: Very well stated.........
Thank you!  I'm looking forward to engaging discussions in this forum!  As an update:  The DoD recently released recruitment numbers for last year.  And what do you know?  Despite some people's best efforts, every branch of service including their guard and reserve components met (and most exceeded) their recruiting goals.  An all volunteer force:  freely choosing to defend the freedom to choose....

Re:
I think yo have a point, but I would take it one step further.  I think recruiters in ALL fields-colleges, job markets, tech schools, collegiate sports (more than anyone) make high school and college student lofty promises.  They are salesmen, and will focus on the positives.  And I do believe the military has a lot to offer a young adult getting ready to enter the world on their own.  But I don't think recruiters should be vilified for using the same practices that UCLA or Penn State would use.  I agree wholeheartedly that they should use the time normally set aside (before/after school, lunch periods, or designated free periods) for such activities.  Back when I was in high school I remember the recruiter and his assistants would be in the cafeteria foyer a few times a year during the lunch periods and after school.  I would guess that most recruiters adhere those guidelines, though you may find some (as with any job/school/whatever) that take it to extremes.  But I like to think they are the exception rather than the rule....

I think recruiters make glowing promises of advancement and they can do want they want. I have found the opposite to be true. My son is a volunteer soldier and is in the middle of a dog fight to get the promised dollars for his education. He has yet to get the promises he was told would happen. The second beef I had with recruiters in schools is that they were forever wanting to pull kids out of class. They were relentless when they thought they had a recruit. I am all for them being present at the lunch period, before school and after school. Never was I for a student being pulled out of the classroom.  sam
