Actually, the American Dream is to be free, independent and then generous
Its supplanting by home ownership (really "owership") was a ploy by the real estate industry in the 1920's to increase sales. Sadly, it worked and now most Americans are shackled by mortgages and think such slavery is the fulfillment of a dream.
My own words describing the American Dream, from my song A Home For All (Copyright © 1986), show what how it is supposed to be:
Then freedom settles like the foam
Thanks ends our quest for most
The guest becomes the host
We rest and watch the coast

the American dream to have a home, but at the same time to be fairly treated. If you buy a home at a certain rate and it goes sky high then at that point its time to step away and sell the house, that is exactly what I had to do. but here they sold houses to people who were breaking the law by having 5 or more families living in houses, that a breaking a city ordinance and not paying the mortgage will get you booted out leaving the bank holding the house, but at the same time the bank probably will profit on homes as they get to resale them. We have both parents working and wanting things now but its the kids that suffer as their are no parents at home and the kids are left on their own.

I missed this post (guess I wasn't "reading" that day). I couldn't agree with you more. The boo hoo folks who now find themselves buried in debt and perhaps can no longer afford the payments should have exercised some temperance
and read what they were signing when the signed on the dotted line.

The irony about 'easy money'
is of course that it is not easy at all. It's a sentence that traps you for potentially the rest of your life or at least until you pay it off. Having been stung myself in the past I can recommend staying well away from it. Very relevant and topic post vogue...thanks.

Credit is a business
Credit companies don't care about the results of their offers. They rarely lose their money, people shed tears, grit their teeth and pay. But are we not older and wiser precisely because we have been caught in the past and know that the repayment road is hard and long? It takes a couple of tries to realize that this is REALLY not something we should be doing.

You are absolutely right. How does that saying go"? Every architect has the house he designs for himself" or something like that. But I can not help but to feel sorry for anyone that was seduced by the American dream just to feel abandoned by it now. It is sad to see people lose their houses. I wish there was something we all could do. Great post Vogue, :-)

Instant gratification to "get" and no thought or care as to how it will be paid for. It's crazy and marketing people feed on this mind-set. Look at all the items you can order and keep, free of charge for 30 days! They take your credit card number - the consumer is too lazy to mail the thing back and they just take the hit on their card every month.

This is a worldwide problem my friend.......
it's just too easy to get instant access to purchasing on a whim; we are inundated with interest free, pay nothing now and instant loans etc etc; younger people are easy prey who don't really understand the ball and chain they will be dragging around and for how long! Interesting thoughts; thank you and God bless

Good post...I joke a lot about wanting more, but I live in a modest home
with a mortgage two or three times less than most of my friends...I have paid off all my debts, except the house and plan to live like this as much as possible (unless my Bday wishes come true, LOL)
