It's sad indeed

when someone learns the darker side of their religion--it's a nasty shock, to realize that the beliefs you hold dear have been marred by others.

I'm sure your friend will find her faith again, and reconcile herself to the fact that not everyone is capable of being nice, or holding kindness and love in their hearts. Just because the followers that came before her were less than holy, doesn't mean the whole system is flawed--just a few select individuals, who will eventually pay the price for their ignorance.
