Even those who prey on other peoples believes will want to please their followers. So if the followers are made aware of the direct threats, without attacking their basic believes, the leaders will follow the flock to try and maintain their own postitions. This will have a "turning the pyramid upside down" effect and the people (about whom it is anyway) will steer the ship via their leaders.
