Bravo! for a voice unafraid to speak up!
I am lad to find you here, Justi. It is good to be able to express our views without fear of reprisal. The world is becoming more dangerous than ever. The nations call out Peace. Peace. But there will be no peace as long as humankind continue.

Justi I do so admire your honesty and your ability to express yourself
I find it refreshing in this age of such political correctness that freedom of speech is almost dead to read what you have to say. Not just that I so often agree either. More that I respect who you are and how you say what you want to say. Don't you ever change.

Almost everyone seems to be voting out of fear...
be it fear of racism, sexisim, of the republicans or fear of the democrats. It would be great of we could get back to being able to vote about issues but the media feeds us a burgeoning diet of lies and half truths. It is good that you have the intestinal fortitude to vote out of something other than fear. With all the wisdom of your life maybe you have seen enough to know better than to be afraid. All of the candidates make me afraid for one reason  or another and I find myself trying to find out who is the lesser of two ecils.

Thanks Afzal, it should be of the people, for the people and by the people in this country but it isn't anymore. You are so right in the end it is the choice of God. Be blessed.

Fine Young Singer
An outstanding comment. Your husband and those like him who are and who are not still in active duty are the only people exempt from standing before the flag and still showing their patriotism.

I noticed you mentioned 16 years. Do you mean it was being taken away by President Clinton as well?

I thank you for your thoughts.  We don't agree but that is because we are still in America where we can do that without fear of reprisal.

I'm not sure to which Obama statements you are referring, so I refrain from

comment on these.

Regarding this "honoring the flag" issue:  My husband is a Marine--a gulf war veteran ("veteran" means "no longer on active duty" in case someone out there is skimming rather than reading).  When the National Anthem is played and the colors presented, He neither holds his hand over his heart nor salutes.  Would you dare call a veteran unpatriotic for this?  If he's wearing a hat, he removes it, out of respect for the NATION, not the flag.

We don't hold a piece of fabric in high honor, but the nation for which it stands.  Wearing a cheap metal pin that was most likely made overseas by a third-world sweatshop does not make you a patriot.  Holding your hand to your heart and gazing upon a flag does not make you an American.  What makes you an American is upholding the Constitution of the United States, and the Bush administration has violated the Constitution of the United States on SEVERAL occasions during both his terms in office:  torturing prisoners at Guantanamo, illegal arrests WITHOUT due process of American citizens, I could go on.  These are all documented.

2008 being an election year, it's more important than ever that our ideal be to understand the bigger picture--what's really going on, and not just cheerleading the side we happen to like.  The survival of America hinges on it, and watching my rights slip further and further away these last 16 years, it's time we get our priorities straight.
