I agree, TAPS.   I've seen it happen so often on the court.  People will say things like
'Let's have a knockabout,' but within minutes they want to change it into a competitive game.  Apart from that, games and sports are by nature competitive, otherwise why have points, goals, winners and losers.

                    Whacky Watt & Woofy Watt?

Now that is a famous Scots name, Whacky.   You should never run out of steam with that surname.  Roses and and smiles from me.

My Scots buddy has risen to the challenge Pat, and sent me a 'Lassies Reply.'  The only problem is that a few of the words may not pass Blogit censors, so I've asked him to edit it.
The comment from my winning opponent that annoys me most is the one that is supposed to make me feel better, such as ...'It's only a game'.   They don't make that remark when they have been beaten.

Johnmacnab, I say competing is what makes anything worth the doing, even if it's just competing with oneself, or competing against intangible things such as ugliness, disease, poverty and malnutrition.  We are all, always trying to beat something.

I don't think the Scot's sentiment, as in your luverly poem, is all that

different from the general American guy's. I'm wonderin' what the jollie lassie would write if she were to put together a few couplets about his advancing age and the impacts of time? I love Ell's comment about competition and enjoyment of the game. And how relax and enjoy for the sport of it all is great in theory, but we all know that winning is necessary from time to time if any game is to be enjoyable.  I really enjoyed the poem... :)
