Re: Re: Debate
Actually, I've never seen ANYONE claim that global warming is only caused by human activity. When you say that's what people you class as "avid global warmers" claim, you're committing two logical/debating fallacies. A straw man, since the real position of major scientific claims is that human causes are major influences. And secondly, an ad hominem attack by your choice of derogation.
As I said, a debate we can have. That means debating rules, not spin or propaganda, which I do hear from both sides.

Re: Debate
Indeed! Very well stated.

But the debate also has to include honest examination of why the climate is changing. Human activity may well have a role. But is it the
only cause, as the avid "global warmers" claim? Absolutely not. Is it even the
primary cause? Highly debatable.

Inform us
Our president supports corn-based ethanol fuel? Corny again, the issue of global warming needs more research to determine our
alternatives. I write fiction, but hold degrees in history and urban studies as well, love.

Debate
Debate on the questions is good. There are people working to try to do both save the planet and save human lives.
The real problem now is that we have only a few decades in which to try things to find possible solutions. The developing countries don't really want to wait, they want the sort of lives we have and those are very energy intensive. Global release of carbon dioxide hasn't even slowed down yet, it's still accelerating.
No good solutions in sight. None. That's not a reason to stop looking though, perhaps the best we can do is amelioration. But we should do what we can.
Global warming is real. Running out of oil is real. Using food crops for fuel is another set of problems. Changing weather patterns will continue to threaten human populations with floods, droughts and perhaps earthquakes. Yes, earthquakes. As the ice caps melt, the shifting weight on the crust of the earth could trigger more frequent earthquakes.
Let's keep working on the problems, keep talking about solutions and keep the discussion civil.
