WWM, what's even more astounding
is that the trustees only met Goldin once
before they hired him. They had no idea what his
plans were for the university. I spent more time
and effort interviewing my office manager
that they did hiring the president of a university
with a student body somewhere between 30,000 and
40,000 strong. ITS HUGE!

Cynthia:

We have been discussing this topic a bit around the office in very bemused and often incredulous tones.  What's most startling to us, I think, is the $750,000 original contract!  That is a phenomenal salary for a university president, especially in this Bush era of continuous educational budget cuts - we have had so many departmental spending cuts and had to eliminate so many fellowships and scholarships since 2001 I can't even remember them all.

Telynor, yep, it is indeed true.
The story has been frot page news in the Boston Globe all week.

I'd do it too!
The guy deserves the money...supposedly he sold his house in California and dissolved his company at a discount to focus on the new job.  He was screwed by Silber and should be rewarded for it.

I'd do it!
I'd take the money and run, and set myself up at another university where, with this USD1.8M in my bank, I can work without fear or favor.  Yeah, man!

Holy {bbbbbbbbbllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!}
This sounds so incredible that it is probably true. That is really appalling -- just out of which fund and tuitions is that money coming out of anyway? Not to mention that's pretty cushy for not doing a job.
