I know whereof you speak, Cheugon! Strangely enough, it never kills scientific objectivity, although it may sometimes put in in a coma...

The turf wars...
...in academia are the fiercest. Primarily because academic types are the most egocentric of any class of people. So much for the notion of scientific "objectivity."

Re: Naut
It is Troosh! But I think their point is that we're really 'hard-wired' to gloat - although they would probably concede it is possible to overcome that. In other words, it's not that we have become that, but we've always been that way...

It depends on what they win at, Pat! Crocheting, for example, is very ladylike...

Re: Nautikos
Krisles, you have a number of interesting questions there. I don't know how far these researchers got into those areas, but off the cuff I would suspect that yes, males and females probably gloat differently about different things, but gloat they do...

Naut
Isn’t it sad the “beating someone” invokes more emotion than making someone happy or sharing in someone else’s joy.  What a pathetic bunch we’ve become if this is true…..

For women, expressing pride in accomplishments and being joyful

when we win is considered unladylike. We have to say we're lucky or we had help, and give the credit to others. Which is why we can identify with the Bree character on Desperate Housewives. She's just got to be the best woman on the block, can't help hinting or outright bragging she's the best damn hostess ever -- I just love the smug smile that covers her deep-seated insecurities...

Hi, Nautikos....................
Sweetheart , I no longer care or am envious of anything someone else has.  Perhaps it was important one day, long ago, but no more.  I look around me and see what I've been blessed with thoughout my life and there's nothing else important out there for me to care about having.  I will keep what I have and be grateful.

Nautikos
I'm curious.....does gender make a difference in these studies?  Do males and females gloat about different things, and in different ways........and is gloating as important to women as to men.....and do we do our gloating through our men, for their accomplishments....these are always those questions I have and these teaser articles never have that stuff in them......(of course, we both know I'm much too lazy to look it up anyway!!!!!)  I think the grass will always seem to be greener to most men.....now that's a very sexist thing to say I realize, but it just seems to be true, at least until a certain age.....and partly because of the very need to have something to gloat about......(okay, it's late.....)
