I'd advise against leaving the kids
When my ex and I split up the kids stayed with me, I wanted them but I would not have done anything to stop equal time. She needed to figure out who she was and while she spent some time with the kids, she was basically living not as a parent..........to make a long story short it caused her a lot of pain and self doubt and at one point she became very depressed, it was kind of scary.
