Seriously, talking with friends, a good bartender, or your cat can be helpful. Unfortunately, chances to do that seem less for many people these days.

As, most of what I hear isn't the sort of thing a non-professional will be able to deal with -- heavy duty trauma, for example.

In keeping with the spirit of your post, I encourage my patients to develop networks of friends and activities, which all can be very supportive whether one has a need for therapy or not. Thanks!

To me a therapist is a rich man's listening post. Us poor people talk to
our pets and ourselves, and we read self help books.  Or we tell our best friend our problems and then they tell us theirs and you usually go home thanking god you don't have their problems.
