Sad, bittersweet story
You tell it so well, too.  Woa, my dad really did play headgames with my middle-child sister.  She used to wet her bed, and he started calling her "Stinky" as his nickname for her.  She told me she still remembers the day he wrote "stinky" in the condensation on her ice tea glass.  He adored me and by doting on me, my older sibs pretty much snubbed me most of my life.  I never understood that and still, when they wonder why they didn't come to my one and only wedding, they have their excuses such as they were going thru a divorce, or single with young kids, etc etc.  Jay and I could never afford to go to their kids weddings, but we would somehow manage to go.  They never knew I put myself thru college, with loans that took me 10 years to pay off on a teacher's salary.  My dad always talked about putting me thru KU when he spoke to them. It took his death (6 years ago) before so many things like this came out.

Mom & Dad are the only truth source we have at first
It's freakin' traumatizing when you first come to the realization that they're not perfect.  Their words and actions have potentially such impact one way or the other that it's amazing more parents don't suffer from paralysis by analysis.

Good post, Seeds.  Good to see you.

Seedlings
My father used to do that nose/thumb thing with me and it would always make me giggle.  He'd sometimes pull a coin out of my ear as well.  Or sometimes he would just stroke my hair and tell me he loved me - those were precious moments.

EVE
This is a lovely post. Sad yes, but he really wanted to play with you, I guess. If I thought my butt would fall off I would unscrew this belly button in a minute. I would loose at least 50% of my weight. LOL Good writing.

Yes they do!
And they believe what you tell them about themselves....whether good or bad. Many kids who grow-up "bad" do so because they were told they're bad....and they lived up to it. Parents' words sink deep! Great post, SEEDLINGS!
