I caught one of those once
I ended up having to do a full system restore.
Thankfully, I didn't lose anything, since I do a backup every night. But it was a huge pain--you're right, those things are really difficult to get rid of!

Doubts
I have my doubts if there is any software that does not purposefully leave some kind of vulnerability to your privacy. People who program these packages usually have the "hacker mentality" which is pretty much the same as "voyeurism". To look at a non-computer related example. Often times a company needing surveillance personnel will specifically recruit people who want to spy on unaware people simply because they will be better at the job than someone who is not voyeuristic.
