His crucifixion was a human sacrifice to stop the sacrifice of animals.  Before then, the children of Israel used to sacrifice animals to try and win God's favor.  We no longer need to sacrifice.  It was also a sign of His complete submission to the will of God and a successful attempt at bringing the prophesies to fulfillment.  He also showed us the way of Loving Kindness which is the only pathway to Heaven.  Not heaven as some place up in the sky, but heaven which is accessible here and now to whosoever are willing and diligent in walking the path to Heaven.  You are right, we who follow His teaching are his Brothers and Sisters as we are all Children of God.
