Re: Sira

Naut,

I guess part of my moral umbrage comes into the window tinting because I don't like that the police have that level of discretionary power, or the right to dictate what I do to my personal property. It's a necessary evil, I suppose. Something that we, as a society need in order to maintain order.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone had strong enough moral values (and common sense) to make it possible for us to live in a world where laws and police weren't necessary to discourage people from doing things...

I allow myself to be guided by my moral compass. There is a great deal of overlap with law, but not always. Tinting or not tinting my windows (I don't) has nothing to do with 'morals' but with some very practical concerns of the kind you have mentioned. What's an acceptable level of shade will always be a matter of debate. I've seen some tinting here that appears to be acceptable. Ultimately it depends on the individual police officer's judgment. (And by law, the police have discretionary powers.)

I generally drive too fast. Not too fast for the conditions, where one could say it becomes a moral issue, but too fast for the law. When the conditions demand it, I drive really slow, slower than most. I do all that, because I am a very good driver, if I say so myself, lol. And when I get caught speeding, which us not very often, I pay because I have broken the law, not because I have acted contrary to my moral convictions.

And anywhere there are hundreds of ordinances and by-laws that could be said to be related to a moral calculus only in the most distant way, by suggesting it is morally desirable to have a smoothly functioning community...
