Would that more people took the time to ponder, Original. Maybe we
wouldn't be in such straits if more people were less reactionary and unthinkingly preemptive...

I was speaking more along the lines of a general attribute, Corbin, but
let's go with your definitions.  Your definition of the conservative is far too grandiose but goes to the heart of why a conservative believes so strongly -- it is fear.  As for your definition of liberal -- well, let's just say that that definition is a continuation of the fear theme.  Conservatives are not all-knowing champions of the just, the right, the pure and liberals are not unethical con-artists bent on destroying the world with their godless ideologies.  Many conservatives and liberals see eye-to-eye on quite a few things.  There are very few true conservatives and true liberals.  But it was liberal thinking that made this country great.  It was liberal thinking that created this country, for there were no countries such as ours and no group of men save dreamers who had the mettle to attempt such a 'grand experiment'.  It was conservative thinking that set up our national parks and built the tradition of military strength that we enjoy.  But to designate conservatives as the watchmen of society begs caricature.  And to label liberals as illusionists trafficking in evil also screams caricature.  For the most part, both want what is best for society, just disagree on the process of maintaining and attaining what is best.  That is why moderation and compromise become the keys...

Conservative: a statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others...........

Great quote! People don't see stagnation as the cause of many problems. They go round in circles looking for cliched cures but they dare not  grow!
