Thanks! I hope you'll forgive me if I just respond to you collectively.
Unlike some of you, I never had the good fortune of meeting Bill Buckley personally. But his passing was almost like a death in the family for me...

What a beautifully crafted tribute to Buckley.......he was also a favorite of mine, for precisely the same reasons.  There aren't a lot of public figures anymore who I can point to and say, "There is someone I greatly admire."  Now there is one less.

Nautikos..................
I didn't know much about him, but my husband is saddened by his death.  I've been hearing a lot about him, now that he's gone.

He was a good man and I'm sure would not have been a happy conservative if he was following the news this morning about our Conservatives governing the country that tried to buy  a million dollar life insurance policy for an independent MP, so he'd vote their way to defeat the Liberals a few years ago.

Yin Yang of Mr. Buckley
He was certainly a brilliant man and orator. However, he was also a defender of Joe McCarthy, did not oppose segregation in the 50's and.......when the AIDS epidemic began, proposed that those infected w/ the virus get tattooed to alert potential sexual partners.

Even though I disagreed with his political philosophy,
I really admired William F. Buckley. In the late 1980s a staunch conservative friend of mine invited me to his personal appearance in St. Louis. I was nuts about his wit and the lively conversations on his PBS show, in awe of his writing output, and enjoyed the evening immensely. He was talking on the ways in which the wealthy support the economy and make the wheels turn, and by the end of his talk he had so persuaded me I was ready to send a donation. I will miss this silver-tongued gentleman. :)
