Office politics, gossip and the grapevine can be very destructive.
A seemingly harmless remark can create a mortal enemy. It seems shallow, but the way to swim in the secretarial pool is to float, say hi, or howzit going, learn to make sympathetic noises -- "oh, I'm sorry to hear that" and never, ever take sides. Even if they ask you, never have an opinion about what someone should do about a problem - especially if you've successfully handled something "just like it" in your own life. No matter what you suggest it will come back to bite you. Funny thing, just listening and saying nothing will earn you the rep as wise, understanding and a great conversationalist.

I did about the same. I chose a different circle outside the work place for enrichment. I found my doctor, business people, and even an attorney to be grand company. I suspect it was the people they were. But I was more enriched by my friends who didn't hold important positions or had degrees. sam
