Re: My book club just read a first novel by a poet

Azur,

I agree totally--to write with simplicity is to write with clarity.

Thanks for reading

Re: Ah yes! To use language well, and creatively...

Naut,

Political correctness is something that I strive for, but usually don't manage. I suppose I'm too opinionated for my own good. And being as subtle as a Mac Truck doesn't help matters any!

Thanks for reading

My book club just read a first novel by a poet
and the vocabulary made me feel as if I could see a ridge that I might never reach.

But then I am not aiming for that place.

I like writing that is spare.

A novelist i met last year spent three months writing a first draft and then a year removing every extraneous word. Facility with vocabulary in few words. Love it.

Ah yes! To use language well, and creatively...
It's so important, especially today, when it's becoming more and more impoverished, not least because of 'political correctness'...

Re: I just need to write. Stories just pop into my head and must be given life.

I know the feeling--that indescribable need to write, and breath life into the characters in my mind. And words are my tools.

Just for the record: You are brilliant, and don't you forget it!

Re: sira---sounds like you're on your way to writing some poetry!

FYS,

I really enjoy reading a well-written poem, and I think it's one of the most challenging forms of writing--like you said, each word becomes much more than just a word, expressing a depth of emotion and meaning that's truly amazing.

But I'm not a poet at heart. I've tried several times to turn out some poetry worth reading, and always seem to fall short. I'll think I'll stick to my stories, and leave the poetry to the pros!

Re: Sira

I love new words too--nothing makes me happier than reading a book, and needing to grab my dictionary several times along the way!

Thanks for reading

Give that a whirl....Poetry, after all, is the artform that challenges a word to be far more than it ever thought possible.

Sira
I too looove words. I'm excited when I hear a word I've never heard and I whip out my handy-dandy pocket dictionary and look it up asap. Or if I hear a word that I think is being used inappropriately again I whip out my handy-dandy dictionary and it's kind of like the prize at the bottom of the cracker jack box for me. I however am not as disciplined as you as far as desiring to use the best word for whatever I am saying. I'm just a child at heart with a cracker jack box full of words
