I think that's the thing with horror, people seeing it as a genre when in truth it's not. This is because it works better in other genres: dark fantasy, dark science-fiction, detective stories and the modern horror of today just doesn't do it when trying to capture those wonderful psychological tales; that's usually the domain of the other genre writers.
Would be interesting to see your stories too!

I have to be in a very special mood
To read Horror stories. It is not a genre I find particularly compelling or interesting although I have been told that several of my short stories were very close to cross overs from fantasy into horror.

I grew up with those same kinds of nightmares, and then moved onto being able to write and read without major concern.
There are pluses and minuses to that as it means that I can read anything but it also means I am not easily scared, leading to a frantic search to find that one story to give me that thing I crave.
What do you write?

I do neither. I have this thing of internalizing those types of stories and have horrible nightmares. I applaud you for being able to do both! sam
