Re: Yet another reason I'm embarrassed to be a young person
Sira, it is truly frightening. But it firefighters went on strike, it would probably just hurt the innocent! I think that what needs to happen is that anyone convicted of attacking firefighters (or engage in other forms of violence, for that matter) should face very, very serious consequences, and not just a slap on the wrist, as is usually the case...

Yet another reason I'm embarrassed to be a young person

My generation, and all the ones coming after me, seem to be missing some essential ingredients required to be decent human beings. My heart broke reading this--partially for the fire fighters, and partially for society in general, because we have to live in a world where hurting our protectors has become something of a sport.

I think kids today (not just in Britain, but all over the world), are growing up without any concept of consequences. Combine that with a lack of morals, no grasp on reality, and a glorified vision of violence, and you've got a disaster in the making.

Perhaps the fire fighters should go on strike for a while, and let the little buggers burn. Once a few people have lost their houses, all their possessions, and possibly their lives, maybe they'll have learned their lesson...maybe?

Re: Sick minds / sick people
I remember that movie, majestic, and yes, it was disturbing! And now it's being played out in real life...

Re: Two things:
Pat, I completely agree with you on our TV fare. Much of it is outrageously bad! Problem is, I am also completely opposed to censorship...But the attacks on firefightes speak of more than just stupidity...

I think you definitely have a point when you say that people, and especially kids, are becoming desensitized to a lot of things - which is strange when everyone is being exhorted to be 'sensitive'...and yet, maybe that isn't strange at all...

Sick minds / sick people
This just goes to prove how sick the minds of some of our young people of the world really are.  It reminds me of what I believe is still one of the most hideous and disturbing movies I have EVER seen called "Clockwork Orange".  This movie, if memory serves, shows in England (can't remember the time period) what some sick minded individuals did for fun.  I have no tolerance for people who hurt other people for no reason, PERIOD!

I agree with you my friend, it is very scary and I'm happy it isn't happening here.

respect. My God, what has happened to England?

Two things:

Attacking firefighters -- stupid example of immature thought processes. There's an old novelty song about beans in your ears -- Mom used to say never tell your children not to put beans in their ears, because if you don't mention it they might never think of it.

Reality TV -- came with the previous writers' strike. The networks had to fill the prime viewing hours, producers could do the setups for "reality" shows without real writers. These shows turn me off, I never watch them, except for "American Idol" which has given some talented kids a chance they might not otherwise get. As for the Survivor, Big Brother, etc.  (and Donald Trump: what's up with that?) they're voyueristic, sleazy time-wasters with no redeeming value, IMO.

It is scary and it seems that once a horrific crime takes place somewhere then it does not take long to catch on somewhere else. I think the internet going around the world has it's good rewards but their is much to be desired with the undisciplined access to our youth.

I'm relieved that this isn't the case here in the U.S.  (We have the psycho school shooters.)

I sure hope it stays over their and never cross to N.Am. And what
troubles me even more is that in every opinion poll when people are asked who they have the most confidence in, the firefighters always come first. So, imagine the consequences of what is happening there: these young people are basically telling us that they do not respect even the most respectful members of their (and our) society. It is really troubling.

These guys put their lives on the line each time they go out. One would think that they would get more support than have to fiend off other trouble especially if it is considered recreation. I say don't bite the hand that protects you.  sam

It's all coming to a head......I don't know what, but something is.  I've watched the reality tv shows proliferate and felt like we were headed toward colosseums and gladiators just anytime now.  I really do believe it has to do with over-stimulation and under-achievement combined with a general desensitizing that has gone on slowly but surely with technology and the continued loss of human contact in more and more transactions from important ones like parenting to seemingly inconsequential ones like checking out groceries....but those little things all add up to interactions that make us human.  Our children are having fewer and fewer of them with any but their immediate peer groups....and children are animals, basically...unsociable, stimulus/experience seeking non-empathetic creatures who wouldn't make it into adolescence alive if they weren't so cute.......imho....but, hey! They'll get theirs'.....they'll have children of their own someday!
