You have written a very profound piece here.

Particularly this:  "I am an atheist because I find comfort and purpose and so much else in my beliefs.  I have often tried to convey the simple truth that I would fall apart as a person if I were to become a believer.  Everything that gives me strength and purpose would be lost and I would have to destroy myself fully in order to believe in God."

Kooka, for these two sentances alone, your post is of unequalled value.

Suffice it to say that by making this statement, you've verbalized a fact that more than just a few believers have trouble grasping.  When a believer states that life is unfulfilled without God, or that the non-believer is unhappy or desolate without God, he or she is not fully comprehending what faith is all about.  Faith is far more than just saying "God Exists", reading a bible and maybe going to church in order to be happy.  I have to tip my hat to you, my friend.

Re: I just have to object to one thing Marvo
People of faith have no more than superstitious fantasies? Excuse me? Just who are these people of faith you speak of? Any and all who believe in God?    All they have are superstitious fantasies?  What makes you the expert? Science? Thats it? The old no proof no exist? Sounds, more like you give yourself too much credit. It wasn't a very nice thing to say anyway. Guess you could tell How I feel about that statement.

Too much credit.
I think you give too much credit to the concept of religious faith. Yes there are genuine people who hold a heartfelt conviction, but it is in no way as valid as your own atheistic belief. You have science on your side my friend, people of faith have no more than superstitious fantasies fed down the centuries by male led institutions intent on demonising and subjugating women for the purpose of maintaining social control.

You just showed a softer side...
It was her honest explanation, and that is the absolute best we can give.  I would have phrased that differently, since I don't share that truth of "even if it's not possible or true".  To me this doubt diminishes the purpose of faith,  and seems to be more of a wishful belief, than the essence of (especially religious) faith. Perhaps I draw a distinction between the faith in life and love, and humanity, and the  religious faith ( I have no doubt in) which moves the soul  and has power to move mountains, that I practice and  use often. (No mountains yet ) which is  suppose to be immovable , unshakable, and yes,  even miraculous.  Guess that's way above the bar, or way out there! I need it to validate that what my spirit has felt at times was real.
