The sound that stops me dead in my tracks is no longer a siren

or an alarm of any kind; I am sort of anesthetized to those anymore.  My answer, that came first to mind, is a laughing baby.  They seem to just ooze goodness and purity of the soul.

The telephone ringing late at night or early morning usually upsets my equilibrium luv.

I feel that way about the phone ringing in the middle of the night. Before I even get to the phone, I have IMAGINED a million voices that COULD BE on the other end.......giving me bad news.

One of my earliest memories is...

being at a mother's friend's house, hearing sirens and being petrified that my mother got into a car accident on the way to come get me.
On a side note, as I'm writing this to you -- I swear to God sirens just write down the street a couple streets over.  I'm hearing them right now.
