You are very observant. I put stoned in there because in part it was a cultural heritage, like wine to the French and to highlight that the judgement on preferred intoxication still does not change the setting of family first. In the case of the businessman I specifically state that he is trying to maintain and improve his image (a false front) and did not say whether or not he was happy. This was about being yourself versus pretending for the sake of gain as much as it was about family values versus selfish deceit.

Your question is open ended, making the answer very subjective and it could go either way. 1. Why does it seem like the bushman has to be stoned around his family to be happy? 2. The businessman could be happy being a philanthropist because of his upbringing from a simple life to being a success in his chosen field. He's paying back the way those who helped him.
