Re: We call the little critters "Boomers"...
Muser! It's so nice to see you! I've missed your posts, and
do hope that everything is well with you and Max! And what a neat experience you had there in the woods! Ours are still blanketed in snow, and will be for another four weeks or so, unfortunately...

Re: Your resident reds.
Thanks for the comment, Guy. Actually, in this case I have more concerns for the red ones, since they're much smaller than the grey ones and don't seem to be able to hold their ground. As a matter of fact, I haven't even seen them in about a week...there's also the possibility the hawk got them, who's been coming around quite frequently...

Re: Well, I think it is a lovely shot--could be cropped a bit so the squirrel
Thanks for your extensive comment, Ciel, which I only noticed today. I have never seen a Jack Pine squirrel! They do sound pretty! Our little red ones (which I haven't seen in a week) have white bellies. They also much smaller than the grey and black ones. And thanks for that tip on the Cloisters. Imagine that: medieval Europe in NYC! Next time I'm down that way, I'll drop in...

We call the little critters "Boomers"...
Hi Naut! Red squirrels are common here in western NC. You know I don't care for the gray squirrels, bah humbug!, but the "boomies" are adorable. They are noisy, and will let you know they don't like it when your cat or dog is in the yard...or you. They are territorial, and they chit, chit, chitter until you go away. Max and I , years ago, took a hike up to Alum Cave Bluffs. It was pretty strenuous for us, but the view was worth it. We sat down feeling like the only two people in the world, and took our day packs off. We took a couple of granola bars and water out to celebrate. Suddenly, we heard the familiar chit, chit , chittering behind us. Three baby red squirrels looking for a treat were running in and out of our packs where we had left them on the rock behind us, and Mama was having a hissy fit! Being so close to them was a thrill, and I admit it, I gave them some bits of my granola bar. What a grand day that was!

Your resident reds.
Red squirrels are so agressive and territorial that you should take a lot of photos of your resident blacks and gray squirrels now while they are still there. Soon reds are going to be common and the others will be rare!

Well, I think it is a lovely shot--could be cropped a bit so the squirrel
is a slightly larger ercentage of the picture...
Out here in the west we have little Jack Pine squirrels, which are, I think, also called Douglas squirrels, that are small and chirpy, and very pretty: orangey under-belly, brown on top with a darker brown stripe dividing the two colors. Saddly, they have nearly disappeared with the aggressive arrival of large grey squirrels, the interlopers!
I saw a black squirrel once, at the Cloisters in NYC. (totally tangential: The Cloisters are a group of medieval European stoneworks, chapels imported stone by numbered stone, then reassembled in a park just a little north of the George Washington Bridge. It houses the medieval collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and is marvelous to visit! The original Unicorn tapestries are there, and the sweetest little wooden madonna ever, with a gamine grin, and a gleeful babe bouncing on her knee! You can get there by subway, and the way out is such that it requires an elevator. The name of the park is on the tip of my mind, but I can't quite see it...)

Wow .. I enjoyed the pic. Quite a long time ago I saw a white squirrel while I had my daughters class on a trip to the White House. We spotted the squirrel across the street at the park. I think the children will alway's remember the White Squirrel.

Re: Nautikos
I've been through that same scene with them moving into the attic, Krisles! It took several weeks to catch them in traps. I took them into exile in the woods, and had some outfit squirrel-proof my attic. Seems to have worked, but they told me they could do nothing about my bird feeders...so I have given up...

My home in KC is a squirrel haven....there is an old Hedge tree stand that runs from back to front that they call home and they use my roof top as their shortcut....and several years have used my attic as a nursery....a very expensive undertaking for live capture and removal. I love to watch them sitting on snow covered limbs that stretch outside my sitting room off my bedroom....peeling bright green Hedge apples that they have "squirreled" away somewhere for just such a winter's day.......they mow through the thick covering, dropping bits of it on the drive below, tails twitching, enjoying the brisk breeze as they survey all around and I can just hear them saying, "Life is good". I loved the black squirrels at Niagra....and your new red squirrels will add beautiful color to your yard and give the birds something to dive for!
