Some liberals get it, Naut. Some conservatives get it. The problem we're
facing now is that an ass that calls himself a 'compassionate conservative' and his band of merry dimwits have begun eviscerating our Constitution under the guise of 'protection.' We need to repeal those executive orders and laws or amend them. I don't believe Bush is a true conservative. I do believe he's a true dictator... uh, 'decider.'

Thanks, BrightIrish. Jefferson was a wise man. He understood that a
complacent populace would allow government to do what it naturally does: exist to perpetuate its own existence at the expense of the governed. Always...

But it is the way every government has ever been, simplerider. All
government's begin at one level or another. They increasingly become more controlling until some form of change occurs, usually violent. Democracies and republics and federal unions are no different. There is a period of decline and increased governmental control, then a period of oppression and/or suppression, then another form of government is instituted.

Sure it is, Glennb. It is natural for governments to grow and become
self-perpetuating and self-destructive. Our government is in the beginning stages of the latter as we speak... and it's taking our liberty a law at a time...

Absolutely! But it's something that today's 'liberals' cannot understand, being in the grip of the 'totalitarian impulse' (George Orwell)...

S.R.
Not sure I can agree with Mr. Jefferson on this.
More government and
less liberty? I don't care for the way that sounds.

Saul Relative,
I would definitely not want to contradict Thomas Jefferson! However, that is not a necessary progression!
