Agents are a hassle I agree. At this point in time I do not have one, I forsee one as necessary in the future though. For your travel guide, do you have a list of mainstream publishers you are looking at? I can dig into my resource files and come up with a few if you want them. LULU and Iuniverse appear to be straight forward companies. Are you planning on primarily Ebook download sales or actual hardbound/paperbound books, or a combination of the two?

I am considering narrowing it down to 2 POD companies
lulu and iuniverse. I'd like to submit to all the "majors" who do travel guide publishing but I don't want to deal with the hassle of an agent (which seems the only way to get your foot in the door).
