Perhaps at the time you 'did not believe in God.'
I do know that God will not let you suffer more than you can bare...though I myself have suffered terribly, have been an addict and will always be in recovery, and only recently when I hit the bottom of the bottom did I ask for help and I did receive.
I still struggle, but I do not struggle alone
