ask another notary
but as to the job?
I hated the job I worked at mainly -- mainly not too much or I'd have never stayed there to finally get retirement. State job. It's the benefits. Low insurance premium; high payout. I had total knee replacement, paid only $300 for the hospital stay, insurance paid the rest and the total bill for the prosthesis and in home PT and nurse; and I had to pay $15 copay per visit for PT on location - 2 knees.
worked from '86 to 2004.

Re: Tattered_Knight
I was checking rates for notaries in this area and the average charge is $10 per document and up to $40-50 for big documents like mortgage papers.

Depends how many notaries are in your area. In my small town there is only one and naturally she has a very fruitful business. In the short term your advertising costs to let people know you're "in business" might offset any income you may make but once you're established it could be a profitable endeavour.

well the mortgage companies use them a lot to notarize loans, but I am not sure if they already have their own, but of course there wouldn't be that much invested, and not really a hobby but just some extra money

I was a notary for 10 years......
Since I don't know how it works in California it's hard to give you an opinion. The process was so simple here.....and my primary reason for doing it was to notarize absentee ballots....then they changed the law and dropped the requirement....
Ask yourself this....how will they find you? What kind of expenses will you incur to help them find you.....is it going to be more of a hobby?
