It was brave of you to say something.
Maybe not safe, but brave.

No.  I'm glad you said something.  Wish we could persuade his girlfirend to press charges.

I'm with b2008, thoughtfulness. I would have had to inform that dimwit
in no uncertain terms that if his girlfriend ever pressed charges and I found out about it, she would have a witness to his abuse.  Give the jerk something to think about.  If I knew the guy or found out from the clerk who the guy was and, perhaps, where he lived, I might give the police an anonymous tip of a man abusing his girlfriend.  Of course, these types generally go home and take out their humiliation on the same person they were talking about abusing.  One thing is usually learned by the abuser here, unfortunately:  not to speak of his abusive behavior in public.  And don't think for a second that they stop the abuse...

Excuse my French, but...
...hell no. Knowing me, I would have said a lot more than that. I would have warned him that his blatant espousing of physical abuse would be evidence enough to have him arrested for abusive behavior on his girlfriend. I bet he would have run his butt out of there then. The idiot.

Sometimes it is worth telling a person to be in place and at other times it
is better to ignore - depends on the facts and circumstances of each case, as a lawyer would put it.

I applaud you, you were right. He is the immature one. Any time the middle finger gesture is used, in my opinion, they are reflecting their IQ. Good for you to take charge of your environment.  sam

You have done a right thing

Bravo. The freedom to swing one's walking stick stops at the place where the nose of the other fellow begins. It is somebody's quote I don't remember and not exactly verbatim.

People do whatever they wish unless checked. IN the above instance you have stopped him doing that for at least an year or so to the extent he remembers, depends on how shallow is his memory or how thick is his skin.

in my opinion, the store clerk should have done something-- not you; it's her duty to make you, a decent paying customer, relaxed.

she's right. You should have ignored him and let him bark.
