Intense is the word that comes to mind...  I don't know if it helps to hear that you are not alone in your experience of life with an abusive father who gave the best of himself to the rest of the world, and starved his family of love and understanding, of all he could have given, if only...

But my dad gave me a lot, too, which it sounds like was not  in your father's capacity.  So before my dad died last spring, he and I had a chance, finally, after 55 years, to finally make a connection.

But some days, some moments, I am still angry that he gave me so little of himself as a person, a father and a friend.

Many of my thoughts and feeling in childhood, when things were worst, were the same as yours.
