Thanks, b2008. I read the report through three times and not once does it
say he was looking them in the eye.  Although it is quite probable that he at least killed one of the family members while looking at them, the report only says he shot them in the head.  This could have been from any angle, including the side or back as they turned away from him.  He could have apologized to them, especially the little girl, while she shrunk away from him.  The little boy was picking up batteries, so probably wasn't looking at him.   Of course, this does not mean that he didn't shoot them while looking straight into their eyes, which would make him aberrant (even your most prolific killers and hitmen rarely look thier victims in the eyes) and either exhibiting some type of psychopathology or sociopathology.  Did you see an interview or read that he looked them in the eyes?

See the below:

SEATTLE —  After slaughtering their parents, Joseph McEnroe apologized to his girlfriend's young niece and nephew before shooting both in the head to end a Christmas Eve massacre, prosecutors alleged Friday.

I just got the above off the link site. When the police was questioning McEnroe, he said he was looking them in the eye probably because he was apologizing as they indicated above and I'm sure the kids probably didn't know what he was going to do to them. So,.... go figure! It's just pathetic.

The guy who killed them ...
...said that's what he did. He looked them in the eyes and shot them in the head. Now that's what was reported so I cannot swear if that is actually the truth. The guy said he cared for the family and it hurt him to do it but he did. Now that's all I can tell you. The female never said she killed anybody from what I heard. And as you said, this person could very well be missing a whole bunch of screws. What can I say.

Is that how it happened, bpitter? I'm asking because I don't know that
that is exactly what occurred.  Is that what Anderson stated in her affidavit?  There is a general disinclination not to look the victim in the eyes when killing them.  This is a human truism.  It is why most military deaths, mob hits, etc. are done "excecution style", from behind and to the back of the head.  If they shot these children from the front, this is a sign of a person with deep, personal hatred.

Right you are, Naut. And the possibilities are limitless. Motive is
whatever her defense (and his defense) decides to use.  Then there is the truth.

Whatever the reasons...
...I can't understand how anybody can look two kids in the eyes and shoot them in the head. Holy moly, that is beyond anything natural.

Saul
I don't think it was just the money! I have a sense they, and especially she, felt somehow 'morally justified' for what they did, for having been 'dissed', for 'suffering' her family's disapproval for her 'lifestyle'...In other words, I think there were strong psychological factors involved. And to be absolutely clear on this: I offer this as a possible explanation, not an excuse! (Too often people confuse the two, believing that an explanation is tantamount to an excuse...)

It's the Pacific northwest, draco. Remember, they gave us grunge... But I
shouldn't be too hard on them.  They gave us Hendrix and Heart, so...

Happens everyday, sam. From insurance companies refusing to pay for
surgeries that lead to deaths to governments going to war over certain assets to people killing each other for financial advantage.  The want of money's a killer...
