I really agree with the last sentence.
It's true that everyone is so worried about themselves and how they might be changing and worried they can't stay the same...that no one ever notices anyone else change.

two small editorial notes you can ignore without hurting my feelings...
"Cos" would be " 'cause" --abbrevated from "because."
"... as good as I can" would be "...as well as I can"
Unless these are choices you made deliberately to set a particular tone.
I appreciate the juxtaposing of story with exposition.
