Eke!
I see a squirrel out my window right now running around in a leafless tree looking like he's having a ball. I would truly hate to think.....

It would certainly take a lot of love to cook squirrel for Christmas --

Mom used to bake a big fat hen for holiday dinners.
Of course she'd have to kill and clean it first. Nothing like the smell of baking chicken, although she baked bread. She was a wizard with bread, rolls and pastries. Her walnut dressing was delicious. Sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, green beans -- all kinds of things we'd canned during harvest season. Sometimes for a special extra treat she'd buy Spam, decorate it with cloves and a honey-mustard glaze. I didn't realize until years later this was anything unusual. As for squirrels, raccoons, etc... Thanks, but not this time.

Re: urp!
SilverMoon, nice to see you! And 'urp' and 'ick' would be some of the terms I'd apply to this feast as well, unless I lived in northern Sweden, or northern Canada, for that matter...

Well yes, Sam, if they made some minor adjustment to that menu - they'd have to anyway, 'cause the passenger pigeon went the way of the Dodo...

Re: What a diet!
If you're desperate enough to live in northern Sweden, I'm sure you're desperate enough to eat anything...

No, I have none of the above in my area, and I also don't like to get up at about 0200 - 0300, although I have at times still been up, in which cases I would probably not be carrying a flashlight, but a glass; finally, bread I eat myself, and I hate marshmallows and won't allow them in the house...

Because of all those difficulties, I think I'll leave raccoon off my menu...

What a diet!
The Sami people living in northern Sweden eat bear's paws, reindeer heart and moose liver for Christmas.

You have to go out at night, about 0200 - 0300, with a flashlight, to catch the raccoons.  Shine the flashlight around any area that contains a trash can, a trash bag, a dumpster, a bowl of dog food or anything like that, and the glowing eyes will reflect the light.   If you don't have any of the above in your area, lay out a few slices of bread or strew a bag of fluffy marshmallows.
