Commen Sense is leaving us!

What in the world has happend to "common sense"? Is it completely dead? The teacher absolutely knew that knife was not being used in a threatening manner, the child was just eating like a normal human being would, if they have etiquette. All she had to do was wait until the child finished, ask the little one for her utensils thereby not alarming her in the least, put the utensils away until she addressed the parent. When addressing the parent, she could have said:

ARE YOU CRAZY...

...or anything else she wanted to say because it was definitely the parent's fault, even though she probably didn't even think of it as being a danger, herself.

Where is common sense?

Children and extremism
I agree with you all, but I can also understand the teachers point of view. Here in our country it happens on a daily basis that kids attack each other with knifes etc. So there is a very fine line that should not be crossed. The teacher could have handled the situation differently to avoid humilation to the child!

It's a delicate one this. Yes the outcome of the poor child been handcuffed and carted off to jail, was by far extreme, as even if they could not contact the girls parent, surely the relevant authorities could have simply confiscated the item, then addressed it at a later time.  The other matter is, that I do feel the parent should bare some of the responsibilty, as in this day and age, especially in places like America, you hear of incidents where an ex pupil or a pupil of a school has gone beserk and in turn killed or injured many.

It's not that this pupil would have gone beserk, though it's also not to say that someone else in her vacinity did not get into a confrontation with another, lost their mind and grabbed the nearest thing, i.e her knife, which would inflict more serious damage than the standard school issue, as steak knives are designed to cut through flesh.  Overall I think all acted a touch extreme and the only innocent party here was the child herself.

Take care.

Bless

I agree that it iis a bizarre situation, but am i alone to be surpried that the mum chose a steak for school lunch? she could have made ti into a club sandwich or something more child friendly, after a steak's place is on a plate at home or at restaurant, but in a lunch box???????/

I'm sorry.....
but this child has been in this woman's class how long....three months???  The teacher hasn't identified her stedents as having personalities....as being human beings?   Why was it the teacher that called the police?   wasn't there a chain of command in the school?

What a great example for considering home schooling...I wouldn't want such an over reactive person as this dealing with my children...

TAPS, Sam 444, SB101 and Nautikos
I agree with all of you. I was shocked at the act but now I clearly see where you are coming from. I was way off base here.

I still am shocked that our children are not safe in their place of education. I know that has been the case for some time now. But God help us. This is so askew! Dear little children will have to grow up afraid of their classmates.

Thank you for pointing this out to me so nicely and well to the point.

I agree with both TAPS and sam, the >>> arrow lady, lol. Sam puts it very well when she speaks of 'a system that has to operate with blinders on'.

That things have come to that point is the real tragedy! In this case, clearly the parents were oblivious to that. I guess the mother 'should have known', but she clearly didn't, she wasn't aware that she no longer lives in a 'normal' world, in which a steak knife is just a steak knife and not a lethal weapon...

But I am also convinced that things could have been handled with more discretion. And discretion is the operative word here, since police anywhere have wide discretionary latitude in dealing with situations. Here they clearly chose to be the 'heavies'...

too extreme>>>>but mom, does brown bagging really need to jeopardize your daughter's sanity>>>>let's look at the parent error before we chastise a system that has to operate with blinders on>>>zero has to be zero>>>>the extremes cited are inappropriate and embarrassing to any adult dealing with a young non threatening individual>>>but folks, the problem started at home!

What a crazy world this is, Justi.
But, parents should be a little more aware of what is going on in this world and what it is like out there for our children, and realize that one must compromise a bit.  If I were that parent, I would have cut up the steak into bitesized pieces and placed it in a container and provided a plastic fork or spoon.
