Since I am behind everyone else, I'm just going to keep moving on for now.

And I thought I should add further that it may well be that in many cases the leadership is cynically exploiting their naively believing followers, when they themselves do not believe what they preach. But you know what? In this case I prefer them to the leaders who themselves are believers, because those are really dangerous. The others may be liars, but are usually more rational...

We must begin by understanding that Sharia law does not allow for the separation of mosque and state. That's the underlying principle, which means that in Islam religion and politics are almost inextricably intertwined. Now, in practice there may indeed often be a difference, but whether or not it really exists then becomes an empirical question...

Naut...
I  would like to ask if you are referring to Islam as a political movement, based basically on the leadership and their motives?  Many of the followers truly believe....and do so in the many by which any believe of any religion would do....

But the leadership and countries controlled by those leaders, are  using the followers as their pawns in the manipulation of the geopolitical processes.  In particular those followers that can be moved to fanaticism.......

Re: Nautikos
Thanks, Wiley. It's no surprise the ole angel Gabriel of the Koran is also in the Bible, because that's where he's from! But no, religions were not created to control women! Men have 'controlled' women long before there were religions, and even that statement is not correct without a lot of qualification...

It's good to find the time again to read your deep blogs on religion. Matter of fact you've had me reading some material here and there and I was surprised to learn that some of what is in the Koran is also in the bible, like the Angel Gabriel. But when you get right down to it religions were created by men for the control of women and shucks now the jigs up eh?

Re: Naut
Thanks, Ann. It's very unfortunate, but 'vengefulness' is built into Islam, I am afraid, and 'mutual respect and understanding' is in rather short supply...

Looking forward to reading more of your insights on Islam. I must confess my ignorance on the subject. My impression is that it is a very unforgiving and vengeful religion judging by the deeds that have been committed in its name. Not being a particularly religious person, although I do believe in God, I don't allow religion to dominate my life. Mutual respect and understanding is far more important to me than a religion.
