That is what puzzles me! One possibility is that he lied when he made that commitment. Another one is that he changed his mind later (I mean, people do!), but then he should do the honorable thing and resign. But what also gets me is that the 'body' of the church, the wider community, quite apparently accepts him. In the United Church he is by no means an isolated case...

Given the reverend, prior to his ordination, would have been asked "Will you exercise your ministry in accordance with the scriptures and in continuity with the faith of the church?" it does seem a little strange he’s permitted to go around making statements which fall outside this definitive boundary.

Re: It's very confusing when politics and religion knit together.
Pat, you raise a number of valid questions, answers to which would lead us too far afield. Here, to put it in form of a question, my concern is only this: is it morally and existentially defensible for a man to take a position at the apex of an institution that is based on a certain faith, without himself subscribing to that faith?

Offy hon,
Indeed! But hey, it's a cushy and 'important' job and probably pays damn well...

It's very confusing when politics and religion knit together.
In this fabric threads get tangled up. We lose clarity about whether politics should be a religious experience or if religious should be political. Should the government regulate how you think and feel about the meaning of life and what's moral? Is it okay to support big corporations with tax breaks and grants but deny health care and a living minimum wage to working folks? And does it make any sense from a biological standpoint to tell hot teenagers just don't do it, when animal nature runs the blood and the church seems like a dried up old soul that forgot the dance and can't do anything but gossip and point shaming fingers?

Well, the guy doesn't believe he'll end up in hell, and I dont either. But why would a man become a minister in a religion he does not believe in? I mean, how bloody inauthentic can you get? I have absolutely no respect for that guy, none...

I really don't know how a man like that can get ordained! Either he misrepresented his views, in other words, he lied, or, what is more likely, the basic tenets of the Christian faith are really no longer relevant in that church. But then, why bother with any of the religious trimmings? That, in my view, is the height of 'bad faith' (pun fully intended, lol) as discussed in the writings of Sartre, Camus and others...

Since Jesus died, was buried, went to Hell and ascended into Heaven in order for us (Gentiles) to be able to have salvation and an eternal life I find the mans description blasphemy to say the least. This is what Jesus also said would happen, the man is on target. I do believe he will change his tune after death.
