The rhetoric is often simplistic, but I don't think that is so much Mr. Edwards's fault as it is the soundbyte nature of the campaign, where time is not reserved for nuance.
As for the excesses you mention, I think the striking thing is how close they are to being true. Note the tremendous number of young black men America puts in prison.
As for the health care proposal, I think it's entirely fair (if not very significant, for I don't think he could do it). His point is that our legislators get government health insurance (including the same ones who decry "government-run" health insurance) and so should everyone else. It would be more fair to take away the legislators' health insurance (most of them could afford private coverage) than to continue to have a two-tiered system: one for government employees and affluent individuals, and another for everyone else.
