Pat_B - thank you, right on and too true - (in that order)
Especially the last part. It is possible and even scarier is the thought of an individual coming to power in a nation that has the world's largest nuclear arsenal, who is an adherant to a faith that has a doomsday scenario within it's doctrines . . . oops, too late.

Gome, you are clearly a solid thinker, logical to a fault.

The thing you point out about those who think they're "good" and "charitable" but are in fact closed-minded, intolerant and hate-filled would be funny if it weren't so dangerous.  The "I am right and you need be like me or you're wrong" philosophy can be taken to the extreme.

It's possible a right-wing conservative Christian with the power to do so might wage war on a Muslim nation on the pretext they were involved in terrorist attacks or were thinking about acquiring weapons of mass destruction.

Talion - It does boggle the mind,
I can't however believe that some folks are that completely unaware of the inconsistencies between their behaviour and their words. Spoken words are one thing but these are published words. Where anyone can review anyone else's positions, opinions or statements simply by rereading their comments or posts. . . . I don't get how some can claim to be proponents of things they have clearly demonstrated in the past that they do not fully comprehend or unwilling to practice.

Oddy - aside from confusing same sex preference, lifestyle and pedaphilia

And aside from insisting that " . . . conservatives do not insist thateveryone be like them . . ." for the most part you pay proper lip service to fundamentally sound principles. The only problem with your saying this is that your behavior in this public forum over the years clearly demonstrates that you are only mouthing these words. Talking a good show as it were, without ever putting them into practice.

You most definitely have the right as a citizen of a free society to remove yourself from any person, situation or circumstance that you find objectionable. This however begs the question in why you are commenting on this blog? Ignoring these inconsistencies for a minute, I do not view the world as liberal or conservative, nor was this blog speaking of those who hold conservative views within the political spectrum. I was speaking specifically of fundamentalist conservative Christians who in fact do insist that everyone, absolutely everyone, even outside of their country's borders, conform to their beliefs.

For you to suggest otherwise I find completely comical. I also wonder if you fully understand that a public forum is not by any stretch of the imagination, considered "your midst" . . . a question I feel is fair to ask, again based on your past behavior.

sam444 - that is a good wish but as I am sure you are aware, one that is

not likely to be realized.

"Religious discussion" or debate is a misnomer. In reality we are all polarized into little camps of personal opinion where the rights of others to express their beliefs are quite often ignored.

What's most amazing, as the previous comment clearly demonstrates, is they are completely unaware of it, even when it's pointed out. Again, it boggles the mind.

I think that you are very right
that much of thedifferences you perceive in this particular realm ultimately boil down toliberal and conservative differences. In fact, I’ve said so myself previously on blogit.  – But conservatives do not insist thateveryone be like them, not in the least. What conservatives do is to hold firm in what they believe to beright.  There is nothing wrong withthat.  I can respect your right tobe an atheist or a Muslim without holding the least bit of sentiment that you mayin any respect be correct or right in your beliefs.  It is not required that I harbor the least little bit ofattitude that you may be right, because I know that you are not.  That said, I can likewise voice myviews.  I don’t want promiscuousgays anywhere around me or around my family or my children because I simply don’t.  I may not want iconoclasticatheists about either, and I have the right to remove myself from them whenever I like because, just like you, I have the right to believe as Ichoose.  If you wish to revoltagainst conservatism, by all means, you do so, it is your right.  But don’t expect me to give up my rightsto similarly exercise my true beliefs because you want respect for some beliefsystem that I feel deserves none. It is no different than tolerating a smoker in your home or office whenyou despise smoke and smokers.  Thereis nothing wrong with insisting that certain things be removed from youmidst.
