Yet, EX TURPI, these things are done as a matter of international
courtesy, warships or no, and they're done on a daily basis around the world.  Not allowing those minesweepers safe harbor during a storm is a huge diplomatic slap in the face.  My problem with the situation is the milquetoast way in which the U.S. Navy handled it.

It maybe that China  was not too sure the request did not have other motives.  Our credibility all over the world is suspect. China is probably saying they are not going to let us in cause they are not sure. These are minesweepers, for God's sake.

Sadly, though, Chyrlann, this comment shows the glaring impotence of
our military and government.  Safe haven is a time-honored tradition, but when it isn't offered or it is denied, what does it say about the government of the ships denied access when all they do is publicly decry the action.  What they should have done is kicked several Chineses ships out of San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle (and possibly a few others), then we'd see if they felt more inclined to apologize and/or allow safe harbor in the future.  I love Buffett, but this was a poor performance by our navy (on top of a disgusting performance by China)...

Hey, I understood this one. I like Jimmy Buffet and those political guys
could certainly learn ethics, and a little love and understanding from almost any musicians.

Probably not, sam. We live in a world of insecurity and vested interests;
