Instead of reiterated David1Spirit's comment, I'll simply concur. I've
been in management for 15 years.  Your style is fine.  Good luck.

Find out what's the cause??????

She could be pregnant.....She could have a new infant, or she is with a abusive husband, or single mother who has to drop the child at bus stop or day care....Or she is diagnosed with some sickness and taking some medication cause her over sleep, or she is afraid that she will be late and not sleeping well and falling sleep late ........can't function well as soon as get up.. Or she sauddennly faced some financial or some kind of stressful event........

Go for a group meeting, ask all to write about their one strength and weakness, see how they can fix it.... So generally say  examnple: Weakness can be being a lil late.....some like that....

Don't attack an employee, but be fair and firm....

If you are a good manager, you will help her to solve the issue in a nice manner....

Writing up will never give a benefit.....rather use some positive approach..

May be all she need is little support and acceptance ......she will be greatful to you. Easy to be tough and rough, but after all we are humans, so show some empathy and bring her to the best, she might become one of your best employee...

Lot of people talk behind people... But positive approach make other person better, and being a manager is being a great leader.....not a mean person. i pray for you to be the best manager, a best manager makes a best team...........A team is consist of many happy employees.....That's the actual strength of a manager......Good luck

Re: I would start by using Option # 2; have to find out what's wrong

I see your point.  I'm pretty good at dealing out the tough love as a father, but I'm finding it more difficult to do in the workplace.  Thanks for your help!

Stay tuned for the outcome...

I would start by using Option # 2; have to find out what's wrong
But taking elements of Option # 1 would definitely be used too. It is a business, and that is the bottom line. Being nice is great, but work has to be done. If they are intelligent they would know that. Anyone who thinks their boss is a jerk for trying to conduct business properly shouldn't be employed by that boss. be concerned for their well-being, but show some tough love too!
