That's right, messages are to be barely noticeable, not in your face!  I know that, have to put it to work, thanks!

Re: Re: Kaboom
Well, of course I suspected that's why it was there! It was a message! The problem with messages is that they don't work if they're recognizable as such! Then they simply become annoying, and often, as in this case, really detract from the story. That his Mom is proud of her son, even though she isn't married and even though his father is black is enough. There is a certain poignancy in all of that, which gets 'overwhelmed' by this business about Michael's mother being a lawyer and father an architect, none of which really has anything to do with the story. As I said, it's straight 'message'...

Re: Kaboom
Yeah, I see your point, think I put that in there because the stereotype for black people here is rarely challenged and comes straight from the movies and is one of violence and makes me cringe.  A woman friend of mine said when her brass band at high school went to the US, they had some free time in LA and she said it was really scarey because there were black people all around.  She said they linked arms and walked together when they saw a black person coming their way....  I really feel the need to fight against that, but that isn't necessary, for the story, but that is kinda where it came from, I think.  But it is one of the things that attracts Yasuko to Micheal the fact that he comes from a good home..... But you're right I really wanted to establish that Micheal was a good guy. and his Mom being a lawyer was kinda like... to show the equal opportunity of all people?!?!  See there is such a thing!  But my readers are English readers so not necessary...  I really want to stir things up and establish that things are never what they appear, and so things just can't be so SET as they are here.  But I don't think I was really considering my audience!   Which I should!  Thanks!

Kaboom
I'm not entirely sure that the first part, about Michael's parents' professions, is all that important here. It doesn't seem to do any work, other than maybe showing that he's from a 'good' family, which doesn't seem all that critical...But the other part is important, of course...
