Walk beside him, counsel him, listen and talk, each in turn though the tongue is raw from the bites, bless the years of plenty when they come, endure the years of want, whatever that "want" may be; guard the good times and cherish them for your sake alone, for lonliness can never be shared, especially the "lonliness of failed opportunities".
I have nothing -- no credentials -- but a 37 year marriage that has prevailed. We have always walked side by side, because you are essentially correct about attitudes in positioning -- ahead, behind. Without my Kate, my beloved wife and friend, I would have taken many wrong turns by "thinking" alone. Sorry about the long comment. joab
