Not that I know of Cynthia....
...although we've been away for 9 months.  We're pretty sheltered here an hour north.

The lad, I would agree with you... Stopping the paper and not keeping yourself informed is NOT the way to go. It takes responsible citizens willing to act...

Re: Guns
The Lad, Thanks for your informative comment. Australia is a fascinating place and interesting to examine in the light of it's governments total support of the Bush administration's conservative policies and the war in Iraq...

Re: Re: I've stopped getting the paper...

I call this assuming the ostrich stance. Burying one's head in the sand when things get tough, an alleged vice of the ostrich, or in your case stopping getting the paper, does not make the bad news go away.  If you assume the ostrich stance all you do is make your butt a more obvious target for those who want to take potshots at you.

To be honest I don't take the local paper here either.  I take my news from radio and TV and on the rare occaisions when I want to vrify something I go to the on-line editionThat is prominently featured on myfavourites list

Guns

I live in Hobart Tasmania.

In 1996 a beserk young man let fly with several automatic weapons at Port Arthur, one of our heritage-listed tourist sites.  It was a beautiful spring afternoon and when he had finished THIRTY SIX people including young kids lay dead and a nation of twenty million citizens in shock.  Because he shot more than eight people the rampage was officially classed as a massacre.  This happened less than one hundred miles from where I live.

It took about two years for the Feds to hammer out new gun controle laws with the seven state governments.  They are of necessity a compromise.  Even to day the pro-gun lobby think they are too harsh whils the controle lobby think they are not harsh enough.  They have not stopped gangland killings.  Legally owned shot guns are still the method of choice for farmers who can't face the future on their drought striken farms to end it all.

It would be foolish to think that laws could stop gun-related violence altogether .  There will always be a way of getting automatic weapons for illegal purposes but at least their use has been slowed down.

America is not the only country with a gun culture problem.  The good thing about Australia is that although our laws  are a compromise  our governments have  not completely capitulated to the gun lobby.  I am not a student of American history but I am convinced that a way could be found to reconcile gun controle with the constitution if the political will was there to do it.

Re: cynthia
Richinstore, we are flooded with them here, thanks to the NRA and the gun lobby.

I've stopped getting the paper...
..from Milwaukee as the headlines usually involve one gun crime or another..it's horrendous and any measures to stop it should be taken.  I'm into prevention big time!
