Re: Nautikos, I thought my mind was clear but,
TAPS, the answer is in my next post, at least part of it...

Nautikos, I thought my mind was clear but,
I am finding  that thoughts of preparing for a Thanksgiving Day for guests is invading my thoughts at every available opportunity, recipes, things I still need at the store, when should I buy a turkey?... fresh or frozen?   But back to your post.  If humans so badly need to believe in these things, as you say, why are there so many who say they don't need it and who refuse to believe?   How did you escape the need?   With the increase of knowledge that we have today, do you expect that belief in Christ as God's son will vanish away as the earlier religions that you mentioned?

I read it when you posted, but I was not really in thinking mode and so I didn't comment.  I'm back to read it again and you better watch out cause my mind is clear today.  LOL

Thanks for the compliments! As to your question, well, since I'm too lazy to write something new, and am also somewhat affected by an excellent scotch, I shall simply quote myself from one of the early pieces in this series, which, I hope, will at least answer it in part.

"Unlike animals, for whom the world is as they find it, we humans have to construct our world. For the individual, there is of course always a world already in place, a language and a way of seeing. We are introduced to it and we internalize it, but we also and collectively contribute to its existence and change it in ways subtle and sometimes dramatic.

In the process we create myths. The word myth comes from the Greek word ‘mythos’ and means ‘tale’ or ‘legend’. And when I say we create myths I do not mean that we ‘fabricate’ things (although we do so in a way), much less that we invent things we know not to be true. The dismissive rejection of something as ‘mere myth’ misunderstands the central role that the mythical plays, and is unaware of its own mythical grounding.

I hold that the ‘tale’ or the ‘myth’ is essential to what it means to be human, and that ‘religion’ is a particular case of the mythical. Humans, for whom the world is not a ready-made ‘given’, have to construct myths in order to construct and understand their world and their very reality. The myth not only becomes part of the reality, but also explains it. Myths are explanations and provide a measure of certainty in an uncertain world, and I am convinced that the dawn of human self-consciousness brought with it tales of ‘who we are’ and ‘what is out there’."

Hope this helps...

My dear, dear man....you wondered aloud somewhere why you seemed to write these series....and, something along the line that no one seemed to be interested....well, first of all, because you CAN - and that you can distill so very much information into as concise an installment each time that you do is still amazing to me - and, second of all, to hell with how many clicks you get, you are writing for posterity....think of what a wonderful collection of all that you have studied and deduced from that, here in one spot....I think that in itself is enough of a reason to do it....and the fact that those of us who are interested get to benefit also is just the icing on top!  So, THERE!

Now, another one of the best in the series I think (top 3 in my book). Only question from this one lingering is only a curiosity...you have repeated the phrase several times about the fundamental human need for religious myth...and I think I have asked you before why you think that exists....is this quote from this installment close to the reason: a kind of anchor in a turbulent world and provides a sense of certainty and comfort, precisely because it is beyond reason...
