No, I don't agree - this guy almost makes me long for Mario Cuomo's return!

Then it's New Haven's fault if they have a problem, Wavy. Here's the
way I see it.  An identity card does not give anyone access or rights to anything.  It just proves that a person is who they say they are.  Giving people access to government programs and privileges is asinine.  The card should only be proof of identity, residence, and biological information and naturalization status.  If they append more to it, then the good people of New Haven (or anywhere else) need to get out, lobby, and vote against it or get it repealed.  When did living in a pluralist democracy begin meaning dictatorial authoritarianism?

Nautikos: New York is the most liberal state in the union and Spitzer probably will win reelection.  However, I don't believe he is up for reelection until 2010.

Saul_Relative: New Haven, Connecticut has an Id card for illegal aliens.  They are able to come out of the shadows and get access to city services.  Many people outside of New Haven hate the idea but the current mayor John DeStefeno keeps winning reelection.  However, only 33% of registered New Haven voters bothered to cast a ballot in the recent mayoral election.

Ex Turpi: It's extremely difficult to find a solution to satisfy everyone.  Eventually, something will occur but some will be satisfied while others aren't.  Maybe the majority of the citizens will be dissatisfied.  Who Knows?  Obviously, it's a very emotional issue.

RedStatesMan: I agree with you.  The Democrats are coveting this voting block but so are the Republicans.  Mexico and all of Central and Latin America must improve their economies so these people won't want to come here.  Unfortunately, we are becoming more like them in terms of economic inequality.  The United States is gaining more millionaires than ever before but we are also losing our middle class and gaining more poor people and poverty.  We must have a strong middle class in order to have a prosperous country for our citizens.

Too bad he reversed himself! I was gonna come down there and get a NY driver's licence myself, just in case I lose mine for speeding...! Seriously though, Spitzer is an idiot, and one would hope you people will remember this come the next election...

Spitzer is a well-intentioned idiot. An identity card would have been a
better idea.  The IRS, the SSA, and INS (and ICE) need to get together, propose a workable solution and, along with funding, work within the guidelines set by the last comprehensive immigration legislation (1986?).  Richardson is the only candidate for giving driver's licenses to illegals.  He says traffic fatalities in New Mexico are down 22% since it's inception.  There are more insured motorists because of this.  Somehow, all I'm seeing is a win for the unregulated insurance industry and a trend in less fatal accidents (possibly due to licensed drivers not having to drive crazily to evade getting pulled over for not having a driver's license -- or something).  But Richardson says it helps the state, whereas illegal immigrants are a federal problem.  But when those illegal aliens take jobs that could have been filled by a legal American or a legal immigrant, or take a job working under the table and not paying taxes, then giving them driver's licenses becomes a problem.  (I think Kucinich and Obama are for driver's licenses as well.)  Giving the children of illegal immigrants free in-state tuition boggles the mind, there's nobody lending me a hand and my sons aren't eligible for any free federally subsidized loans from the government to go to college (unless they want to join the military).  You do not give privileges to aliens, and especially not illegal aliens, that you do not even accord your native-born and naturalized citizens.  It's bad policy all the way around...

WD: I cannot impugn motives. I am not in people's minds. I do not agree that drivers licences should be given under the rules Gov. Spitzer proposed. It just would not have worked.

I subscribe to the ideas postulated by the President. Find a way to make the stay of those who are already here acceptable. Take measures to stem the tide of those who come to the country in violation of the  the required procedures. Then the matter  will be settled.

We have spent so much time discussing, rather than finding a solution.

Walk good; stay well my friend.

Illegal Immigration
Of course the Dems are angry! This issue revolves around a possible new voting block for them. The Dems are nervous because they do not know how to handle this issue. Just look at Hitlery and her vague as hell comments concerning this question. Everyone knows what the Dems want. They want the borders opened for all of Mexico and whoever else to come in so that these people will vote for them; the hell with the country. Liberalism: America's Cancer!
