I agree with you.
I dislike those who work for non-profits simply for self-aggrandizement and those who are just shrinking violets who won't stand up and take leadership when apparently there's a call for them to do so.
I enjoy volunteering because it makes me feel good to help another person, to fight for a cause, or to feel like I'm contributing to my community. I would like to see more altruism in non-profits.
What's difficult about non-profits is dealing with administrative stuff. Most non-profits I know are barely making it. They get most of their funds from memberships. It seems like each event they are doing is a fundraiser. In my community where we don't have own major tv station or own major radio station and not that many local businesses with curbside appeal with much walking traffic so it's hard to get the word out about programs and events. Unfortunately, most grants do not provide money for administrative staff support or for advertisement. What ends up having is overworked volunteers who can't go out and do their art or help the community at the grassroots level--they spend most of their time dealing with office work minutaie.
