Flannery is probably correct in his assessment. In pre-literate societies there is often an intricate relationship between natural events and social ritual, which can have devastating consequences if something 'gives' somewhere. But then of course it's the West that gets blamed...
Such societies are also prone to adopt disastrous new beliefs. In some parts of Africa, people refuse to take AIDS medication because 'it is just a Western plot to make Africans sterile'...
