Saul_Relative: I agree with your analysis of Rep. Kirk's position regarding Iran.  The military option should only be used as a last resort and it would open up a hornet's nest that no exterminator could destroy.  There are many people in Iran who don't like the current Prime Minister and we should try to work with opposition leaders to possibly overthrow him or wait for new elections.

I agree with you regarding Mort Kondracke.  He isn't as ideological as Fred Barnes.  Barnes is more of a neo-conservative.  Kondracke is more sensible than Barnes.  I generally agree with him more than Barnes when I watch The Beltway Boys on Fox News.  A final comment on Iran: Maybe the previous Prime Minister can get back into power.  I believe that we can make some headway with him.  He was more reasonable than the current Prime Minister and he seemed to want to develop a relationship with the United States.  I also agree with appealing to these ayotollahs.  Maybe some of them aren't so fanatical and see the recklessness of the current leader.  If the religious leaders turn against the current Prime Minister, he is finished as a leader.  We can only hope for this positive result.

This is a good article, Wavy, that shows someone actually thinking

in a proactive and assertive manner with regard to the Iran situation.  Kirk seems to have some really good ideas in dealing with Iran and with those who may be hurt by the sanctions on Iran.  And although this plan may not be the one they ultimately go with, it is an option that should be looked into, along with other measures and countermeasures, before we send in the missiles and bombs.  Exhausting every possible punitive sanction is far better than one irreconciliable bombing foray or military attack.  Opening a reciprocating dialogue with Iran and her neighbors would be beneficial as well.  The problem with the United States' approach to Iran is that it is bellicose and dictatorial without giving Iran an opportunity to walk away with something from the table and saving face.  Yes, we're dealing with a religious madman, but appealing to reason through the people and through the religious rulers (the ayatollahs, who have the real power in Iran) will have a greater chance of success.  If that appeal must be through sanctions, then sanction them.  But leave violence for the absolute last option -- and use it as a last resort, diplomatically threat-wise and military action-wise...

Mort Kondracke is a great journalist, less pontifical and far less sanctimoniously ideological than his buddy, Fred Barnes.  Mort is the thinking man's conservative voice...
